Succeeding the Ford Zephyr as Ford’s new executive car, the Granada was launched in 1972. Initially called the Consul Granada, it wasn’t until 1975 that the Consul name was dropped with the resolution of an ongoing dispute with media giant Granada Group who had tried to stop Ford’s use of the Granada name. The UK Court of Appeal ruled that Ford could register the name Grenada as a trademark.
Although equipped with a Cologne V6 engine, instead of the older Essex V6, and with new features such as air conditioning and fuel-injection, the Granada Mk II was essentially a reskin of the Mk I. Although it was a strong seller, in 1985 it was replaced with a Mk III in the UK market that was actually a re-badged Ford Scorpio.
