Inspired by the Museum’s 1957 land speed record car MG EX181, MG Motors have created EXE181; a thoroughly modern tribute to “humanity’s quest for speed in the 20th century”.
Unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show, the concept was launched by the team at MG’s London Advanced Design Centre who designed the car. It was then taken to Goodwood Festival of Speed in July as a continuation of MG’s centenary celebrations.
EXE181 aims for a top speed of 257 mph (415 km/h) with a drag coefficient of 0.181 and can hit 62 mph (99 km/h) in just 1.9 seconds. The bodywork is smooth-surfaced with a central teardrop-shaped cockpit bubble, reminiscent of the 1957 EX181. Inside, the concept is a yoke-style steering wheel with a touchscreen at its centre.
The sloping tail fin is capable of rising from the body to act as an airbrake when slowing the car from high speeds. The powertrain has not been confirmed, but to reach the speeds the concept is aiming for it would need to produce over 1000 bhp.British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, Registered Charity in England & Wales: 286575
