The Atlantic was a sports model introduced in 1948, originally intended for the North American Market. The original convertible with power-operated hood and windows was later supplemented by this saloon, made until 1952.
Unfortunately for Austin, the Atlantic was considered too expensive in North America because the same amount of money would buy a native V8. By the end of production 7,981 Atlantics had been made, of which 3,597 were exported but only 350 of these went to the USA.
This example was originally sold in South Africa and subsequently re-imported into the UK by the late Mr Lionel Newbury, whose widow kindly donated the Atlantic to the Trust's collection.
