J12 M40
British Motor Museum
This is the prototype for a project known as 'Winter/Water' and is based on the heavy-duty, military, Defender XD model. There was to be a fleet of 686 vehicles capable of wading to 1.5 metres in salt and fresh water. With a fuel heater and additional radiators the Winter/Water could also withstand temperatures down to minus 46C.
The vehicle was designed to fill with water to allow traction at all times. A raised air intake was fitted, along with transmission breathers, and preparation for full submersion would take about an hour.
The trials were carried out by ATURM (the Amphibious Trials and Testing Unit, Royal Marines) at Instow in Devon and in the Arctic Circle.
This Wolf was retained by Land Rover until 2006 as a reference vehicle.
