J12 M40
British Motor Museum
This vehicle is one of 45 AP2 prototypes constructed to test the core systems of the Freelander 2 model.
The car started life as a first generation Freelander but it has been stretched by four inches to discretely accommodate the Freelander 2 running gear.
This AP2 car is also fitted with the Volvo derived six-cylinder petrol engine, which would become an option on the earlier Freelander 2 models, as well as a revised air intake system built into the front nearside wing.
The interior is basically the same as the first series Freelander apart from gear change and terrain response controls which have been loosely fitted in. This prototype also still carries much of its test electronics.
