This Freelander is one of the AP1 - 'Attribute Prototype stage 1' - prototypes to test the core systems of the second generation model. One of the first hand-built L359 Freelander 2 'Attribute Prototypes' and based on the Freelander 1, it has components intended for the new vehicle.
It has certain aspects of the new bodywork and it has a Volvo derived six-cylinder petrol engine – this would become an option on the early Freelander 2.
These would be followed by a further series of prototype development vehicles, concluding finally with Production Prototypes which were as close as possible to the final vehicle.
