J12 M40
British Motor Museum
A similar-looking but plastic-bodied Mini produced in Venezuela and based on the original ideas for plastic-bodied Minis developed over 20 years ago. Tell-tale signs include the strengthening bars on the roof and fake seams around the roof to maintain the look of the traditional Mini.
The glass-fibre bodied Mini prototype, built in 1968 and also part of our collection, went to Venezuela in 1991 for evaluation and played an important part in the development of the Mini Cord.
Production of the new car began in 1992 in Mariara, Carabobo State, Venezuela. The engines and other mechanical components were supplied from Britain.
This particular car was the first Cord to be imported into Britain and features leather trim and air conditioning.
