J12 M40
British Motor Museum
Introduced in 1970 and styled by Michelotti, 'Stag' was actually the design project's code name and re-used as its production name.
The engine was a Triumph V8, basically a double version of the slant-four SOHC engine from the Dolomite and also supplied to SAAB. Convertibles and hard tops were offered and options included overdrive or automatic gearbox.
The Stag was a GT that looked and sounded great but suffered from engine problems, in particular overheating. This unreliability was one possible reason for the low final production figure of around 26,000. This car was built on 24th June 1977 and is the last one off the Canley production line.
